According to one recent survey conducted by both the American Kennel Club (AKC) and the IAMS pet food company, 88 per cent of dog owners said they are more likely to watch a dog show on TV today than compared to a decade ago. Last year’s telecast of the biggest annual dog show garnered the highest ratings ever for a dog show on Animal Planet.
The AKC web site lists upcoming shows of all kinds, and gives the winners of shows that have already taken place. There are several different kinds of shows. “All-breed shows” are sponsored by all-breed clubs. As you probably guessed from the name, any AKC-approved breed may be exhibited at an all-breed show. At this show, every day offers a unique mix of competitions, demonstrations, and special events. Each day of the show is presented by a different prestigious AKC dog club, resulting in one "Best in Show" trophy each day.
Obedience trials score a dog's ability to perform exercises such as retrieving, jumping and scent discrimination. All AKC parent club national specialty “Best of Breed” winners join the ranks of top dogs invited to the sixth annual National Championship. As in the past, invitations are issued to dogs ranking in the top 25 of their breed.
Who are the judges of these shows? At these shows, the judges are people who have studied the breed and have a great deal of knowledge about the breeds they judge. To qualify as a judge, there is a test and interviews. A judge must demonstrate years of experience in a breed before he or she is certified by the AKC to judge. What do judges compare among the dogs they judge? Judges are looking for how closely the dog conforms to the official standards or characteristics of the breed. They run their hands over the dog, checking eyes, ears, teeth, muscles, bones and coat texture in comparison to the standards. Judges must be able to make their decisions without yielding to pressure from top breeders and handlers or from sore losers. Dog shows are also intended to evaluate breeding stock. The dog's overall appearance, structure and an indication of the dog's ability to produce quality puppies is judged.
If you are looking for a dog of a certain breed, dog shows are an incredibly wonderful option for finding breeders of a given dog breed. The breeders that attend these shows are typically showing one of their dogs or even are there to see the performance of one that they bred and sold in the past! Their presence also shows a commitment to their dogs, which is a positive sign that you might want to do business with this breeder. Dog shows represent a lot of work for the participants, but you do them because they're something you love, like any hobby.
Dog shows are on TV all the time. The Westminster Kennel Club Dog show has been broadcast on the USA network for 12 years, and overall, it's done very well in the ratings. Dog shows help breeders maintain the look of the breed all across the country, and hopefully across the world. If we left it up to each individual breeder to determine whether their dog looks like its breed, then each breeder's dogs would look different from the next one over time.
Dog shows are a lot of fun. It is one place you get to see many different dog breeds all looking and behaving their best. Dog shows are advertised in local newspapers, on posters in local shops, and on radio and television. Many times a phone number is given that you may call to get more information on the time your breed will be judged. Dog shows are like a second home. One participant states her own reason for why she participates is simple: "I like the people. It seems to me the people who are attracted to dog shows are both people- and animal-oriented.”
