An innovative project by the David Hume Institute at Edinburg University has found from three business contributions that those in the business world think they can provide solutions to the environmental movement.
Participants were asked to imagine they were in the year 2050 and Scotland had achieved its greenhouse gas emission targets of 80% of 1990 levels. They were then asked how this would be done.
David Watt, director of the Institute of Directors, Scotland said, "Well first of all, we began to realise that the economy – and the firms which make it up – was not the problem but the crucial solution. The private sector was in fact the main mover in meeting the targets. The market-driven economy was the saviour of our planet – some could argue."
The writers say it means that while Scottish society, businesses and the economy will be different, it can also be a wealthy and prosperous society. In order to do that, a global price mechanism for carbon is crucial...
