Cheap Flowers Need More Time

Cheap flowers can be had, either for yourself or as a gift, if you’re willing to spend a little time to save some money. All flowers are beautiful, and most smell good, to boot. But some grow more easily than others, and those tend to be less expensive than something that requires a lot of human intervention.
What are some of those flowers? A perennial favorite is lavender. This flower grows in the Highlands of Scotland, in one of the most inhospitable climates around. Growing it elsewhere is a piece of cake. The long, slender stalks with fragrant lavender flowers make beautiful sprays and smell wonderful.
Daylilies and Black-Eyed Susans are sunny, bright flowers that are also easily grown and inexpensive. Both of these flowers are long-lasting in a cut arrangement.
But if Daylilies and Black-Eyed Susans are a little too pedestrian for you, how about a few low-maintenance roses, but low-maintenance ones? "Felicia" is a beautiful pink rose with a sweet, semi-musky fragrance. It is very disease resistant, so is very popular in gardens. "Bonica" is another pink rose, and it was voted the world’s favorite in 1997. It also is very disease resistant and easily grown.
Besides purchasing easily-grown flowers to keep down your costs, think about when you’re buying the flowers. In July and August you’ll often find flowers, especially annuals and perennials, on sale. Most of the blooms may be gone, but they may look worse off than they really are because they’ve been sitting in a flat for way too long. Take them home and give them some tender loving care, and you’re likely to be rewarded.
Another way to obtain cheap flowers is to buy directly from the grower. Check your phone book or do an internet search to find growers that also allow sales to the public. Some even offer delivery! The flowers usually come in a sealed florist’s box rather than in a vase, so be aware of this if presentation is an issue.
During the spring, summer and early fall, farmer’s markets are outstanding places to obtain large, fragrant bouquets of flowers for cheap prices. Of course, the vendor will have a number of arrangements already put together, usually in water to stay fresh while on display.
In most farmer’s markets you can also request a specific arrangement. The vendors usually have buckets of individual types of flowers, and can put together something specific for you at your request. The price for an individually-designed arrangement is often the same as the pre-made ones, so that gives you an even better bargain!
And don’t forget, everyone selling flowers has a sale at some point. If you know in advance you’re going to need flowers, say for a social occasion, you can keep your eyes peeled for sales, discounts, or coupons that will give you an even better bargain.
Cheap flowers don’t have to mean poor quality. Fresh blooms, great fragrance and discount savings can be had if you pay attention.
