Emissions can destroy marine life

Scientists from the University of New South Wales postulate that carbon emissions will destroy Southern Ocean marine life in as little as two decades.
Human-created carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is usually absorbed by the oceans, making them more acidic.
University of New South Wales researcher Ben McNeil and the CSIRO's Dr Richard Matear found acidity levels in the Southern Ocean will damage tiny ocean organisms, sooner than the 100 years previously thought.
"They start to dissolve. One is called a tetrapod - swimming snails, and they form the basis of the food chain. It has the effect of amplifying bringing forward the onset of these problematic conditions for these particular species," said Dr McNeil.
Dr McNeil said the earlier predictions had been based on average annual atmospheric carbon dioxide projections. They overlooked the impact of seasonal variations in the Southern Ocean...
