The size of your diamond should only be one factor of many when choosing ring like an engagement ring, for example. Actually, what your fiance wants is the most important factor. Some of the other factor include clarity, color and cut.
As you are shopping for an engagement ring or any other diamond jewelry for that matter, you'll begin to notice all the different ways used to make diamonds appear larger than they actually are. It is the intricacies of the diamond's cut, shape, and setting which impact its apparent size. Make use of these techniques if you want your engagement ring to appear larger than its true carat weight.
* Try fancy shapes – Have you ever looked at a diamond ring and was amazed at the shape of the diamond? That's the power that a diamond with a fancy and unique shape. What makes them great for our purposes is that they tend to appear larger than regular, round diamonds of equal weight. Diamonds with elongated shapes, such as marquise, oval and pear shaped diamonds work best.
* A pavé setting – I'm sure you've seen what a pavé setting looks like but you probably just didn't know what it was called. It basically is looks like a continuous surface of diamonds. A pavé setting is made up of small diamonds set side by side into little holes, with their surfaces level with the setting which gives it that continuous look. The diamonds are held in place from tiny beads are crafted from the surrounding metal. Diamonds in a pave setting look larger than it really is because of the difficulty in distinguishing individual stones. Rings that have intricate pavé settings are expensive. There are times where it is actually cheaper just to buy a large diamond.
* An illusion setting – An illusion setting involves a diamond mounted to a mirror-like plate before it is set into the band. This kind of setting makes the diamond look much larger and gives it a touch of added brilliance. The only downside to this type of setting is that it's much more difficult and expensive to repair.
* Choose a ring with side stones – This type of setting doesn't make your diamond look any bigger but it gives it more shimmer which can be just as good. Side stones are set into the band on the side of the main diamond.
* A bezel set diamond - Choose a setting where them rim completely encircles the stone. This is called a bezel setting. A great way to make this setting make your stone look larger is to use a ring made from white gold or platinum. It really enhances the shine of the diamond. Use a bezel made from yellow gold for a yellowish tint on the back of the diamond.
