Lawyer Roles

A Lawyer is a person who gives legal advice and has been trained in the law; also known by the names, attorney or advocate, their role varies depending on the situation. When a lawyer appears in court to represent a client in either a civil or criminal case he may be called an advocate; many never appear as an advocate, happy to work in areas that do not require this type of representation. As a legal advisor, their aim is to provide legal counsel; when a client has legal problems that requires available options, they can provide recommendations.

One who primarily practices law in a courtroom is a trial lawyer; this does not appeal to everyone because it requires fast thinking plus a confident manner, and those who prefer to carry out his work are paid very well.Trial lawyers are extremely competent individuals who are just as proficient outside the courtroom; they investigate the case they are representing, talk to witnesses and arranging evidence, for example.

It is difficult to get away from the law in any of its aspects; this is why lawyers have their own set of laws they must abide, to be above reproach. There are many specialized areas of law which they can focus; however, all can and do appear in court from time to time to represent their clients.

Today's life and law is becoming ever more complex creating new subject areas for the legal system to practice in; some of the areas of specialization could be:

* Constitutional Law
* Criminal Law
* Environmental Issues
* Marine Law
* Construction Law

This specialization means that some legal representatives may never have to practice their skills in court!

Representing environmental issues can mean they may work for the government or private companies; a few examples are listed here:

* Public-Interest Groups
* Federal Agencies
* Oil Companies

Often this work will be mundane as it involves planning applications and licenses for example; however, they also protect companies where claims for damages are being sought.

A growth area for attorneys in recent years is that of intellectual property rights; an area that has increased owing to the use of digital products; music and video for example. Most large insurance providers engage the services of specialist lawyers in their legal departments; insurance contracts and claims are often investigated which is an are where their expert knowledge will be invaluable.

Most attorneys are found in private practice, where they concentrate on criminal or civil law; criminal lawyers defend or prosecute persons charged with a crime; however civil law is much different and is normally based around interpretation of the law but this is a gross simplification.

Another high profile legal position is in cases where the public interest is served; this can be where a large company or government body may be involved with actions that have affected the general public. Lawyers who are endowed with a little more social conscience are the ones who work for charities and legal aid schemes; the work involved might mean providing legal assistance or representation to people who are not in a position to help themselves.
