MIND WANDERS DURING MEDITATION

QUESTION:
My mind wanders during Meditation, Thoughts arise in succession and disturb by concentration. What should I do to stop the working of my thoughts?

Answer given by SWAMI VETHATHIRI MAHARISHI

Stopping the thoughts is not practicable. Streamlining the thought is the purposeful effort of spiritual practice.

Whatever we have done perceived and enjoyed – all these got imprinted in our live-particle. In our brain-cells and in the cells of our physical body. The cells will be reflecting all such imprints one after another according to the running frequencies of mental waves from time to time. It is the Law of Nature under its Cause-and-Effect system. One’s personality is the sum-total of all his Karmas. All the imprints in man are his own property accumulated by his own desires, efforts and deeds. When one is awake, one’s mind has to work in two ways. Either it will make new imprints by perception, enjoyment and memorizing, or it will be reflecting the old imprints according to the running frequency of that time. The mind will stop working temporarily at the time of sleep. It will stop working completely at one’s death. In these two happenings, what benefit one can get when the mind stops working?

Thinking that the mind should stop working in the waking state in illusion. Trying to stop thought is an act of deteriorating the normal functioning or working order of the wonderful brain-cells. We have all along practiced our mind to work in such and such a way and in that manner it is working. If we want to change its pattern of working, then we have to streamline its functions in a planned way.

Meditation is a new practice for the mind to perceive the movement of our own live-force, our spiritual existence. Fixing our thought on this several times during the day with awareness, we have to make new imprints in us. As the new imprints get deeper and stronger, we can do Meditation with less disturbance of thoughts. I will give an example: Suppose you are a chemist and druggist. You have hundreds of varieties of medicines arranged in the shelves. You wish to take one particular medicine from the shelf. Your eyes fall on a hundred labels but you are not confused or disturbed on that account. You know your job and so you proceed coolly to select your requirement. Similarly when you sit for Meditation you are crossing several mental frequencies, because at that time, you are coming down in your mental frequency from beta to alpha wave. On the way of your inward travel, you are crossing several microwaves and imprints thereof. Do not be worried over the reflection of imprints as thoughts. Sometimes many unwanted imprints may get exposed only to be exhausted. Therefore respect the Law of Nature and make better use of your mind by Meditation and Introspection.

Practicing awareness to deal with the materials properly and to streamline the mind accordingly is spiritual achievement. In Meditation, we try to practice just this awareness. Because of the strength of imprints of habits and inadequate will-power we forget awareness very often and at that time under the force of the Law of Nature, the imprints reflect as thoughts. Here we should understand that our Effort (Will) and the imprints of habits (Nature) are working simultaneously. The mind is engaged by whichever is stronger of the two. Nature, for its part, is always working steadily, but the Will is subject to fluctuations in its strength. When the Will gets weak, Nature gains the upper hand.

In process of time, as a result of Meditation and Introspection, will-power develops. Depending on the increasing strength of will-power, emanation of thoughts will be reduced at the time of Meditation. Otherwise, the thoughts cannot be avoided as we wish.

In conclusion, my advice to you is: Proceed with Meditation without getting perturbed over the thoughts. As you put in more and more effort, the thoughts would certainly come under control.
