THE MANACE OF SEXUAL HARASSMENT IN OUR CITADEL OF LEARNING

Simply put, Sexual harassment is a situation in which a person repeatedly coerces a member of the opposite sex into an illicit affair he or she would otherwise not consent to. Sexual harassment could take the form of flirtation, subtle seduction, amorous advance or rape. It permeates the entire strata of the society, and its involves everyone, including the highly placed some of whom even condemn it publicly.
Females are usually the victims of sexual harassment, this is caused by the mentality of male superiority and inferiority complex foisted on the women folk in almost all cultures. Boys are often raised to have little or no respect for girls. Consequently, the female is generally considered inferior, a creature to be exploited or at best, to be used as an instrument of sexual satisfaction.
Indisputably, an antisocial behavior, sexual harassment has negative effects n the society. In the educational sector, it has to a great extent, contributed to the fall in standard. It has resulted in moral decadence in the workplace with the attendant low level of production, and in the home, it has caused long lasting emotional problems, besides a number of victims of rape have contacted sexual transmitted diseases including the dreaded AIDS.
In the Universities, for instance, morally bankrupt male lecturers unabashedly describe their affairs with female’s student as their fringe benefits. These lectures, some of whom are old enough to be the fathers of their victims, intimidate female student with treats of failure at examinations. Such lecturers exchange marks for illicit sex, and often, they award marks in their bedrooms or more aptly, on their beds.
But some people are of the opinion that the lecturer is not wholly responsible for the situation. This school of thought believes that the lecturer is very often at the mercy of female student who would stop at noting to “overcome” any male lecturer who is not easily influenced. These female student fall into two(2) categories. The first category of girls are the intellectually weak student most of whom are not qualified to be in the university, they entered through the “back door”. In a bid to miss the examinations, they think of ways to go round their academics inadequacies. They come to lectures dressed to kill in order to entice any lecturer whose course(s) threaten(s) their academic programmes. The girls become coquettish as they compete with one another to win the favor of lecturers. In the classroom, he is hypnotized by a bevy of ladies dressed as through they were in a beauty contest, all of them trying to catch attention. This is tempting.
The second category comprises females student who find it very difficult to stay on campus and study. Such students usually gallivant about with their sugar daddies. The more daring ones even travel abroad while the school is in session, missing, as s often the case. A number of continuous assessment test. When they return, they boast openly that they would pass their examinations by all means. Then, they would proceed immediately to work on the lecturers and in the end, they would get better grades than those who actually wrote the test to the dismay of their hardworking colleagues.
Moreover, some of the cases of sexual harassment that have been reported on campuses really began as moral affairs, but when the circumstances becomes unfavorable, the females, characteristically resorted to blackmail and shouted: “victimization”! Sexual harassment!. In such situations, the truth nearly always does not surface because, usually, there are no eye witnesses.
The situation is hardly better in the workplace; females who want jobs are often required to go to bed with some personalities who hold key position in the establishment where they seek employment. In the case of those who are already working, including married women, promotion is influence by sexual gratification, very often, men engage their females counterpart in baud jokes and conversations that convey double meaning or sexual innuendoes. Female confidential secretaries know better.
Some people think that the victims should take part of the blame because according t a proverb, if we blame the thief, we must also blame the person who left his things outside. This school of thought believes that females who dress indecently send out the wrong signal and actually encourage sexual harassment, such reason is absurd, Admittedly females should dress decently, but to suggest that indecent dressing on the part of females is responsible for the upsurge in sexual abuse.
The problem seem intractable but the reality is that it can be solved. Women, who are largely the victims of sexual harassment can do a lot to keep it at bay. Female student should earn respect by being studious because brilliant females students are hardly victimized by male lecturers into sex. Male lecturers, should on their part, endeavor to resist the overtures of seductive female student. They should be cognizant of their responsibilities o be good examples to their student. Working women should desist from unworldly conversation or ribaldry with their male counterpart, they should dress modestly, But if inspite of this, anybody says something vulgar, they should summon up all moral strength and take proper action, perhaps by resorting to pungent expressions of disapproval. Even if this result in female offending the male counterpart, for instance, she have succeeded in ending the harassment once an for all.
In conclusion, the government should make sexual harassment attract severe penalty, like imprisonment if t ever hopes to rid the society of this antisocial and animalistic behavior in all its ramifications.
