For those of you who do not know, a wedding is a legal ceremony that commences a union between two people; these days it is no longer required for the partners to be of the opposite sex. Whatever the background and history to marriage, it is still a legal union between two people; the law requires that the couple sign the marriage certificate in front of witnesses before the marriage can be legally accepted. A woman taking part in the ceremony is called a bride, a man called a bridegroom; they are then referred to by the title husband and wife, once they are married.
Church Weddings
Wedding traditions and customs vary greatly between cultures, ethnic groups, religions, countries, and social classes. Many people, whether religious or not, still prefer to have a traditional ceremony performed by a recognized religious minister in a Church of their choice. Primarily in the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States and the British Commonwealth, these ceremonies are known as white weddings.
Twin Ceremonies
A double marriage is a single ceremony where two couples rendezvous for two separate ceremonies; typically, a person with a brother or sister might plan this type of occasion with that sibling.
Weddings in a Foreign Country
A destination wedding is where the engaged couple and often guests travel to attend the ceremony; as a wedding option it can work out considerably less expensive this way.
Weddings over a Weekend
Two day or weekend weddings are a great way to extend the ceremony and festivities as an increasing number of people are finding out. Themed occasions can involve golf, hang-gliding, shooting or any type of venue you can imagine. This is quite a good idea especially if the bride and groom have similar interests as both they and their guests can stay at the same location.
Getting Married on the Internet
Internet weddings seem to be something that has come about recently and a number of people are now using this method to seal their vows; planning is made easy however, with online guides that list reliable and friendly vendors. Marriages that are broadcast live online are also referred to as online weddings.
City Hall Weddings
Civil weddings have to be carried out by a local justice of the peace, judge, even a mayor can carry out the ceremony and most places out side of a church will use one of these people. Civil ceremonies may use references to God, but they do not generally make references to particular religions or denominations. These services are brief and to the point because they are a legal procedure and the couple getting married does not mind the circumstances of the marriage, just the fact that they are married.
I hope this has helped with your understanding of what a wedding is even though the information has been mainly based around Christian beliefs.
